NHC owns the bees on Niue (26,000 hec) since 1999, The bees (Apis mellifera ligustica - Italian honeybee) are the last significant stock of disease and mite free Italian bees in the region (and probably the world). In partnership with regional and international agencies NHC is establishing the Pacific Bee Sanctuary. Objectives are to protect and preserve the honey bee, to use this clean stock to re-boot beekeeping (as well as agricultural productivity and environmental protection) in the region, and as an insurance policy should CCD ever reach NZ and threaten our agricultural sector.
